Hawk Mountain was the world's first refuge created to protect birds of prey. Founded in 1934 by conservationist Rosalie Edge, the Sanctuary has been an outstanding environmental resource ever since. The North Lookout features a 200-degree panorama of the Mountains, and it is relatively easily accessible by a ¾-mile trail. Between August 15 and December 15 an average of 20,000 hawks, eagles and falcons pass over this point, making it a popular place for bird watchers, and photographers. The Sanctuary includes a Visitor Center with a museum on birds of prey, an art gallery, and a bookstore. Facilities also include an outdoor amphitheater, classroom, and an historic 18th century building.
